Baile Entero
Baile Entero / Pablo Martín Jones
Opens on the 3rd of March 2023 at the Centro de Cultura Contemporánea Conde Duque (Madrid)
Let’s begin by imagining what today’s music would sound like if we had kept certain traditional rhythms from the Iberian peninsula alive, and if they formed part of our musical reality in a natural way. What relationship would we have with those rhythms? How would we listen to them? Would we dance to them, and if so, how? Would we know where folklore begins and ends? If we altered traditional rhythms, playing our own versions, would we be creating folklore? These are some of the questions that underlie Baile Entero, a project of musical investigation and creation where Pablo Martín Jones uses traditional rhythms as a foundation to explore, intervene, evolve, erode and nurture, just as if this had happened naturally as a consequence of history, life and the passing of time. Rhythms interpreted in a traditional way (and with traditional instruments) which are then disrupted, reworked, and redeveloped into something new, with a two-fold objective of not losing their character as the primary driving force in music and dance, and also of achieving a sound that has its own identity. A piece of work that invites us to share this process with creators from various disciplines, from choreographers who reflect on movement and help to bring forth the new dance steps, to visual artists who generate a visual frame to recontextualise this non-tradition, with a view to presenting an all-round spectacle (a concert, dance, rave or performance art piece).
